Icarus and Velvet

Imagine a future world in which most of the land is no longer habitable, poisoned by a long-ago catastrophe and filled with hungry, nightmare creatures. How and where would you live? Icarus’ people – the Avians – have fled to the high places and learned with fly with wings made of sky iron. Velvet’s people – the Subterraneans – went underground, building teeming cities topped with glass domes in which they reclaim the land and grow crops. Centuries of treachery and mistrust have left the Subs and Avians as mortal enemies, but when Icarus and Velvet accidentally meet, they must learn to trust each other and work together to overcome an enemy that threatens to destroy both of their communities.

Icarus and Velvet is a dystopian fantasy for teens and upwards. It has just been released (November 2022) and is gathering great reviews. Visit ZunTold.com or your local independent bookshop to get your copy and prepare to be swept into their world.

The
Mudlark Mysteries

In the 19th century, mudlarking wasn’t a fun hobby. It was a desperate, dangerous way of scratching a living. I’ve written more about mudlarking in the ‘Mad about Mudlarking’ page if you’re interested.Set in Victorian London, the Mudlark Mysteries feature brother and sister Edie and Joe Lighterman, their friends Union Jack and Ottilie Zhang, and an array of unforgettable characters, some good, some the opposite. Each book chronicles an action-packed adventure, based on something they find while mudlarking.

The Red Tunic

I am very proud of this, my first novel for adults. It’s inspired by my lifelong fascination with the First World War, the repercussions of which stretched far beyond the battlefields and trenches, and by the remarkable women who defied society to fight in it. Set at the start of the 20th century, neglected twins Nina and Alfie grow up heavily dependent on each other. They start with experiment with each other’s gender roles. When the First World War commences, gutsy Nina makes a momentous decision. To save her gentle brother, she will steal his identity and become a soldier in his place.
